L.T. Ariyawathi: Sri Lankan Maid Torture Nails Removed – L.T. Ariyawathi, a Sri Lankan housemaid, was tortured by the man that employed her in Saudi Arabia. He reportedly hammered nails into her body. X-Rays have shown that there were more than 24 nails and needles in her body, and the ones that remain inside of her pose no threat to her well-being. The nails were mostly short, but some were as long as two inches. The surgery was a success, and the woman is currently in recovery, although she has been deeply traumatized by the event. The abuse took place over the course of a full month, and all of the nails were not hammered into her at one time.
She had undergone a month of abuse at the hands of her employer, and as a result was not able to sit down or walk properly. Authorities have launched an investigation into the matter. Nearly 1.8 million Sri Lankans go outside of their own country for work and abuse among these individuals is very common, but nothing as horrific as the injuries that were suffered by L.T. Ariyawathi.
It might be hard for the Sri Lankan government to prosecute the man responsible. There are no laws in that portion of the world that allow them to extradite the man to their own country for prosecution, and they will be required to seek the help of the Saudi Arabian government, who can be less than cooperative at times. It will be interesting to see if the man is taken to Sri Lanka to face the charges filed against him.
